I store a lot of food in my freezer, whether meats I've sous-vided, veggies I've frozen, or even things like croissants and such. I vaccum-seal them all in standard sous vide bags, so that I don't ever have to worry about freezer burn -- it doesn't matter whether I reheat that croissant in the toaster oven 5 days later or 10 months later. But I generally want to reheat just a single portion -- a single steak, a pair of chicken thighs, a single croissant. But using my vacuum sealer to vacuum and seal both sides of each individual steak, each individual croissant, takes forever. So I do them in a long row -- a single long bag with 5 steaks spaced out, or 8 croissants spaced out. I seal them at once, then I use this to create seals *in the middle* of the bag, in between each individual item. This way I can cut open the end or cut off a single pouch and reheat a single portion without breaking the seal on all of them, and I don't have to use my vacuum sealer again to re-seal the rest. This works great for that. It does exactly what I want.I was worried because I saw a lot of negative reviews about it not making a good seal, not making a consistent seal (better towards the hinge), or the bottom of the unit melting or something. In terms of making a good seal: you have to figure out the right number to use and hold it down long enough. E.g. my sous vide bags don't get a consistent seal on #2, but on #4 it's perfect. The light stays on for only about a second and that doesn't produce a good seal, but holding it down for 6 seconds produces a perfect seal. If you're not getting a good seal, increase the number and/or hold it down longer. In terms of consistency: there is no difference in the seal closer to the hinge or further away. But it does make contact close to the hinge first, so I have to guess this is people closing it and opening it slowly, and not holding it down for long enough in between. In terms of melting: I'm only use this to make 15 or 20 seals at a time. Nothing is getting hot or melting on the bottom, it's fine. I can't speak to whether you could use this to seal 1,000 packages in a row over the course of an hour though. Obviously at some point it might overheat, and I don't see any indication of a safety mechanism to automatically shut off once it gets above a certain temperature. So it works perfectly for me. My two main complaints are:1) The packaging is impossible to open, because they glue-gun the cardboard box shut, and the cardboard is extremely thick and heavy-duty. You basically have to destroy the box to open it which means a return would be an ugly thing.2) This thing is super ugly. It definitely looks like it belongs in a factory, and not an office or kitchen. I don't know why nobody manufactures an attractive version of this? DOTPRO sells an 8 inch one that's vastly more attractive, but sadly not a 12 inch one like this. But this does the job and it's inexpensive, so it works. Even though it's ugly, I'll still give it 5 stars since it's obvious from the photos that it's ugly. I knew what I was getting.
